faq & bio
What design services do you provide?
I provide Consulting, Sketch Plans, and Master Plans. Often, a consultation is all that's needed, especially for those with their own resources—such as employees, access to equipment, or friends with expertise. I bill for consultations by the hour and I have a one-hour minimum.
What is a Sketch Plan and how much does it cost?
A Sketch Plan is a drawing done at your residence or business at the time of the appointment. The drawing is not to scale, but it contains enough information for you to move forward on your own—or work with a contractor to accomplish the various components of the plan. A Sketch Plan is most appropriate for smaller properties, if you just want to tackle a specific area, or if you find you need help in the middle of a project. These appointments generally take two to four hours, depending on the size and complexity of the design. I bill for sketch plans by the hour and I have a one-hour minimum.
How does a Master Plan differ from a Sketch Plan—and what does it cost?
A Master Plan is a comprehensive scaled drawing that responds to the client's specific design requirements. It is suitable for project phasing, competitive bidding, and construction. It is appropriate for residential, commercial, or recreational properties for which the design requirements are more complex. It's a more collaborative process, generally requiring more than one meeting. My fee for Master Plans varies by project. I'll submit a proposal with an estimate of hours and a fee schedule for approval.
Why shouldn't I just describe my ideas to a landscape contractor?
Customers often describe their ideas to me and then immediately ask if any are crazy. Sometimes the ideas are a little crazy. Bouncing your ideas off a professional who doesn't have a financial interest in the implementation of your ideas can save you a lot of money and help you avoid mistakes. Most contractors aren't designers and most have a vested interest in their recommendations or implementing almost any idea you have, crazy or not.
What if I want to do just part of a property, leaving other areas for later?
That's fine! I often recommend clients start with the highest priority anyway. We'll still want to discuss your ideas for the rest of the property to ensure the best use of resources during the first phase.
Do you know about drainage and how to fix drainage problems?
Yes, drainage is one of my specialties. I can explain the dynamics to you so that you know what needs to be done—and why. An ill-conceived drainage solution can be costly and ineffective. Sometimes, drainage problems can lead to structural problems. Resolving the drainage issues may keep you from having to deal with expensive repairs to your property.
Do you install your designs or have your own contractors who do the work?
No. I'm the man with the plan, but I'm able to refer you to contractors whom I feel would do a good job; however, the competitive bid process is best for ensuring you get the fairest price for the work and materials involved.
